As default he tends to be taken from The Stolen Throne era (aka 8:99 Blessed), during Maric's rebellion, though the tide has turned in their favor and they are winning the war.
If playing from Inquisition (or later), the choices I default to unless specified otherwise are that Alistair was hardened and married to Anora, so sure he quit the Wardens but he's doing just fine as king in Ferelden (and it's not awkward at all). The Warden did the Dark Ritual with Morrigan (though tbh any Morrigans and/or Kierans who want to play out that it was Loghain? P l e a s e that would be hilarious), and Loghain was sent off to the other Wardens, and during Inquisition he gets left in the Fade for possible Fade shenanigans.
